Another Door and Window Section is Nearing Completion

I do realize that this project is taking me an exceptionally long time to complete. This door needs a speck of paint on the door knob.

Doors and Windows

I have been slow in completing this structure. As you can see I have started creating doors and windows. I started the window by glueing a square piece of window materials to the inside of the structure. Then I added mullions to the glazing material to create the four pane window. The panel door was scratch built using various widths of card stock glued to a cardstock backing.

They are architectural drawings that set designers use to envision and then to build their scenes and create their sets. They illustrate some of the many sets that may need to constructed. The illustrations also bring some light into new projects.

THese 1.76 OO, 4mm scale doors and windows work well with my HO, 1/87 scale structures. With my scratch building continuing I need all the doors and windows I can get my hands on. These Wills kits offer some nice alternatives.

A Hive of Activity

I feel that I am behind my goal of completing at least one project per month. Perhaps I will surpass my goal this month. Here is the current state of my workbench. There are componnets for two HO scale structures here. One, a small tarpaper shack and two, a dilapidated clapboard shack.

From the top left to right and then clockwise: scale tarpaper strips, 9" scale clapboard strips, two clapboard walls, one completed, weathered, and dry-brushed. The other is under construction. Two battens for the tarpaper shack lay on the wall panel on the left, two walls for the tarpaper shack, one being weighed down after having had stripwood added to the underside to strengthen the side walls. I used bassword for this.

A Template for the Windows on the 1/87 Scale Board & Batten Structure

I thought I would give building scale windows another try. This time armed with some advice and a templete i created using some leftover material. I marked one to five scale feet on the vertical and the horizontaL and then added a half foot mark. This will ensure that the horizontal and vertical sides are the same length.

I had intended to use this template as a guild when constructing the window. However, It is already proving to be a very tedious process and I am thinking on yet another method for creating scale windows.

Another Go at a Multipaned Windows

The plan is to scribe the desired dimensions on the glazing material, leaving enough material around the edges to adhere to the inside of the building and use prepainted strips to create window panes by glueing them carfully to the scribe marks. Thanks for suggestions, my friends

My Second Attempt at Creating a Multi-paned Window

My first attempt went down in flames. With only about 1mm tolarence my window fell apart once I started to cut the interior portion of the window from the cardstock.

This is my second attempt at a multi-pane window and I am not all that satisfied with the results. Creating windows in HO scale is a tedious process.

Most of the card will be used to adhere the window to the structure and only 1 - 1.5 mm of the remaining window casing will be viewable from the outside. Due to their quality I will pass them on as windows in disrepair and try again.

Building Windows

Another item I would like to get to this month is building a few scale windows. I have built a few windows for my HO structures and up to this point I haven't been too happy with the resuts, so I would like to experiment with different window styles and building techniques.

Should I create them from cardstock, plastic, or wood? I want to use the correct type of window for the building material, such as wood, brick, or concrete. I would also like to review the different types of windows used in different eras.

I built this door sometime ago. I had intended to use on a 1/4 scale wooden shack that I had planned to build.

I believe I used balsa strips, but it could have been basswood. I prefer balsa over basswood for it easy to distress, however it has been a while since creating this piece?

Scavenging Bits from a Door and Window Casting

I picked this window and door casting out of my windows and doors bin the other day while looking for odds and ends for an upcoming project. However, the dutch door seemed to be bit underscale. The door measures 2.5 scale feet wide, which is acceceptable and 4.5 feet high, which in most cases is way under scale. Although most doors measure 7 foot high, finding a door that measurers less than this is not improbable, however unless the structure is being built for darfs, 4.5 feet is not going to work. Not if you have scaled itens close by.

The windows on the other hand measure 2 by 2.5 scale feet (1/87 scale) which makes them usefull for an upcoming project.The door, well I will throw back into my collection of doors and windows and see what comes of it. Prehaps I will want ot build a wee little structure for darfs someday.

Constructing the Windows

I have come to the most tedious part of construction, the assembly of the windows. I have already added the glazing to the interior of the windows and have 'framed' out the outside of the window. I have been experimenting with different methods for creating scale windows. All I have left to do is to add the shash, rails, and grills.

I had planned to use four pane windows of this portion of the structure as it represents the older part of the shack. I am giving this process some thought and am trying to come up with an efficient method for this very tedious next step.

Having Another Go at the Window

I am using wood strips for the trim on my windows. I had completed both windows, at least the trim for both windows and what happened is what always happens when I rush through a project. I messed up! I am going to have to redo the trim for the window on the right.

I will building the inside, that is the "window" itself by placing the window frame directly on retangle of clear polystyrene.

Framing the Windows

I have started to frame out the windows. Perhaps I should have used the flash for this one. The details are not too good on this picture. I will need to fix that area above the window. The clapboard section fell off from.

This room will measure a square 12.6 feet all around and will receive a rock foundation. As will the rest of the structure. I have ordered some white LED’s and plan to make this my first lighted structure.

Creating Windows and Doors

Throughout the years I have created several windows and doors for my scratch building purposes. Doors usually come out fine, but when creating windows I have often had mixed results. This Youtube video makes the process look easy (although still tedious when working with smaller scales).

IHC 1/87 Scale Windows

Here is another set of HO scale windows. These like my collection of windows this sprue is molded from polystyrene. This set is from International Hobbies Corporation, are manufactured in Denmark, and are IHC’s #4406, “22 HO Windows, railings, and miscellaneous ornamental parts”. I don’t believe that these castings are still being offered and have most likely gone out of print.

1/87 Brass Window Etchings

I have found some more brass etchings. The forty odd windows are from Ratio. Ratio is a purveyor of plastic models in various scales. Ratio produce model railroading structures and equipment along a British prototype. It is good to have several of the same style which this collection provides.

1/87 Scale Windows & Doors

I don’t suppose you can have too many windows; ounce you start building there go three here and a few there. With the new year quickly approaching I have plans to get back into scratch building and kit-bashing. Looking through my windows and doors collection I am looking to see what I have on-hand. It looks like I have a few windows and doors to get me started. These polystyrene apertures are left-over kit parts and from various manufactures.
