Images from the Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend

A re-enactment of a Revolutionary War Encampment was held on the Daniel Boone Homestead over the weekend. It was a two day event with about seventy-five re-enactors taking part. There were camp, small arms demonstrations and talks about the life of camp followers. There was also gun and blacksmithing demonstrations. The programs climax was a re-enactment battle between British and colonial forces
Here are a few, of what I thought, were some of the better ones. Perhaps I will go through the images again and upload a few others.

Continentals firing their rifled flint-locks back on the British.The "rifled" gun was more actuate than the British smooth-bores, but could not be reloaded as fast as the smooth-bore; they could be reloaded about two times per minute.

Weekend Excursion-Revolutionary War Encampment and Reenactment

Although I do have a link to the Flintlock and Tomahawk blog on home page, which basically covers the French and Indian war, I have not written anything about this period. Over the weekend, my wife and I are planning on attending a Revolutionary War encampment and reenactment. I know the French and Indian War predates the Revolutionary War, but customs were not too much different in these eras. I hope to get some good images of the battle and other activities around this camp and look forward to sharing these with you.

Summer Reading List (An update)

I have just about finished reading all of the titles on summer reading list and have started to look for a few more titles to add to this list.

The Most Dangerous Game (short story), 1924, Richard Cornell

The Most Dangerous Game is a story about a big game hunter that is being hunted by a Cossack aristocrat on an isolated Island in the Caribbean. Score: Big Game Hunter=3; Cossack aristocrat=0. Nice ending!

Anthem (short story), 1937, Ayn Rand

Anthem is a dystopian short story. Anthem is set in an unspecified time in the future. "Mankind has entered into another dark age characterized by irrationality, collectivism, and socialistic thinking and economics." In this dystopian society the concept of individuality has been eliminated. It is a place where uttering the word "I" is punishable by death. Interesting story!

The Land of Mysteries, 1840, Edward S. Ellis, 1840, Edward S. Ellis

The first part of The Land of Mysteries was full of adventure and dire escapes from the natives of the region, however the ending wasn't at all realisitc. Two poeple fall in love (an adventurer and the a princess), filling thier pockets full of diamonds and exscape through the jungle to safety.

Ironclads & Ether Flyers: Aeronaval Combat for Space 1889 (Space 1889 Sci-Fi Roleplaying), 2000, Frank Chadwick

Interesting reading and very imaginitive. I don't know if I will ever play this RPG, but perhaps, if the mood stikes me and I have all the neccessay miniatures; perhaps someday...

Adventure, gold, and indians. The Steam Man of the Prairies was an imaginitive and fun read.

My Summer Reading List(revised)

I have revised my summer reading list. I have removed one epub and have added two new titles that I have just sent for. The two new titles have been added to the bottom of the list. I hope to be able to get through this new abbreviated reading list over the summer. I will be making a post about Edward S. Ellis and Frank Read once I start reading these novels.

The Count of Monte Christo

I finally have completed Alexander Dumas’s The Count of Monte Christo a story of several French elitists family’s and the revenge the Count of Monte Christo takes upon three characters because of an old grudge.

The Count of Monte Christo is, as far as I can recollect, the second novel by Alexander Dumas I have read; the first being The Three Musketeers. The Count of Monte Christo was the only novel that I have read with over one hundred chapters; however the plot never once lost my interest. I was amazed at the many twists and turns the story took and depths of the Counts personality that the author expressed.

Great novel. I look forward to reading something else from Alexander Dumas. Any suggestions?

Looking Back and Forward. Miniatures I Would Still Like to Purchase in 2013

It was several months ago that I post: “Miniature Categories for 2013”, where I mention the type of miniatures that I was interested in obtaining in 2013. Here are those categories I mentioned:

Now that we are half way through the year it is time to take inventory of how far I have progressed in my procurement. I haven’t gotten to all of the individual categories, but have made some purchases from the following:

• Fantasy: 2 miniatures
• Pulp: 9 miniatures

For the second half of the year I have decided to changed my focus a bit and would like to add some of the following miniatures to my collection:

• 1/1200 scale sail and other types of sea going vessels (I have my eye on a few civil war era vessels from Histrofigs)
• Woman (Some of the next category might work)
• Steampunk and Victorian SCFI
• Pulp (additional Sky Pirates, Rocketmen)
• Prehistoric(Cavemen, girls (Reaper), beasts)

My Summer Reading List

The summer season is less than two weeks away and I still have so many books from my Spring Reading List that I have yet to read. I keep getting sidetracked with other books and forms of media. I did not get through my spring list.

I am almost finished with one of the titles on my spring list “The Count of Monte Cristo”, a novel by the French author Alexander Dumas. I will be bringing a couple of titles from the spring list forward; the rest will have to wait for another time. Because there is always so much going on in the summer, I am going to keep this list short.

I haven't gotten too far in my readings because I keep on picking-up other reading material. I am not happy unless I am in the middle of at least two books. As you can surmise from my other posts I have become severely side-tacked from my goal. But, at least I am having fun. I am now reading Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days and will try to stay on track.

Two New Titles have been added to my Reading List

I just purchased two hard copied books from my local library. They had been out on the cart in the libraries lobby waiting to be purchased. I found a hard copy of Twain’s “Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and a soft copy of “That Darn Cat”, by the Gordans. I have read the former a few times already; it is one of those books I like to read from time to time. The other I haven’t read, but did see the movie as a child by the same name which was produced by Walt Disney Movies. The film was produced in 1965 and starred Hayley Mills and Dean Jones.The story is a light-hearted movie about a cat who becomes a secret agent and blows the cover on a couple of bank robbers who are holding a bank tellers hostage.

The two volumes will be added to spring 2013 reading list.
