1/87 Scale Horse and Plow and Plowmen

Like most of my collections I have had this mini-scene for sometime. I had placed this kit into a small box on a shelf next to my workbench to wait my attention.

I usually use super-glue for the kit parts. The metal parts required very little clean-up.

Another Door and Window Section is Nearing Completion

I do realize that this project is taking me an exceptionally long time to complete. This door needs a speck of paint on the door knob.

Pyramid Roofed Structure - Roof Panel Sections

Hear are the four triangles that will make-up the pyramid roof. The roof panels measure 13.5 foot wide by six foot tall. I am not all that happy with how the paint job ended up. I will try a couple little tricks in order to make the roof look a little better.

Doors and Windows

I have been slow in completing this structure. As you can see I have started creating doors and windows. I started the window by glueing a square piece of window materials to the inside of the structure. Then I added mullions to the glazing material to create the four pane window. The panel door was scratch built using various widths of card stock glued to a cardstock backing.

Laying Randum Width Boards on the Subwalls

I used 3 by 5 file cards for the boards and cut them from 3 to 14 inches wide. I used a file card to add wood grain and a hobby knife to add a few knots. I need to go back clean up some of the window opening.

The Wall Sections are Being Cut

I have started to cut out the door and windows openings for these sections. Since I didn't cut the roof sections to the correct width I will need to re-layout the triangle sections again.

Working on a Shack with a Pyramid Roof

I am using bristol board for the sub-walls. The building will measure a scale 12 foot square. Randum width boards will added to the subwalls. The walls will be nine foot tall.

There will be two doors and six windows: front and back sides get a door and a window; the sides will host two windows per side. Four triangles will be cut from the bottom sheet. These triangles will measure thirteen foot across the bottom and will be six foot tall.

Wall sections and material for roof sections.

Building a FOS Diner

This another HO scale structure from FOS and it looks like one I would like to construct. Jason Jensen shows his build of this structure.

Thingamajig

This thingamajig was created to fill a pole building that is being built to go along side of the Wills Sheds. The open shed will need to be filled with materials, projects that have been completed and those in process. It might take a few objects and materials to fill this shed so I have taken it upon my self to build what I can. This object was primarily built from foam-core and with paper strips and few other materials was built to be set in a corner.

The March Challenge

For March's challenge I was to build four scale structures from materials I have on hand. I mainly wanted to make use the thin balsa boards I had recently aquired. I also want to build two structures primarily from card stock. I am making this post with the two structures that I have completed and although I still have ten days to complete the other two I wanted to make sure this post was posted in March.(This will be my last post for March).

Below. Two of the four structures from the March challenge.

This is outhouse and measures 4 by 5 scale feet in HO scale. The shed is constructed primarily from 1.5mmm thick balsa sheet. The roof was constructed from card stock and top sheet of corrugated cardboard. The foundation was created from several pieces of match sticks that have been glued to the bottom of the stucture. The out building was painted with a series of darker colors and then weathered with swathes of paints and washes.

I have started to experiment with using a wood burning iron to 'score' individual boards. I haven't came to any conclustions yet. The second structure a storage or tool shed is created from that same sheet of balsa I used above and measures a square nine scale feet. The windows are from my scratch box. The foundation was made by glueing bits of leftover paper rock textured material on pieces of matboard and the roof of a thick black construction paper cut into strips to represent tarpaper. I didn't mention it but a set of steps were created for each of these two structures.

Detail Scribing and Greeble Creation Kit

I haven't decided on how I may use these tools. Whether I will use primarly for scribing or some of both. I do enjoy creating my own greeble and the templates will make it a bit easier to create more intricate pieces.

HO Scale Desk and Chair

The information and instruction sheet for a desk and chair in 1/87 scale. This this a metal detail part and required some assembly.

Where is the chair? That is a good question. It was an easy build and I had wanted to use this in some scene. We will get there.

3 Model Power Sheds are Coming Along

Although they are easy to build I have had some fun building the three of these sheds. There is a fair bit of extra details that have been added to the kit, not to mention the details that have moulded into the structures themselves. This is where most of my excitement is coming from. Noticeing the details and then deciding on the correct colors to paint them.

This small shack’s only distinguishing feature are the wood slats used to create the door and the hardware used to connect the door it the door frame.

It may be simple designed but it has a bit of its own charm.

This shed includes several separate and molded on details. The door is unique in its design and the included windows are thin and well molded The structure includes what I assume is some sort of electrical box in which I added two pipes down to the ground. I used a .5mm rod for these. Under the front overhang there is a small electrical box and what I presume are two indicator lights. These lights, a green and red light, alternate when a message is in bound and during transmission.

I am not all that happy with the shingled roof. Perhaps I should plant a tree and let it overhang the roof a little.

This is the larger shed of the three and offers the most in the way of details. First you might have noticed that the door is rather unique in its construction. It has three windows at the top. There is also a number block identifying the building as being number 93. I need to touch up this up with another touch of paint.

The over details can be found on the sprue that accompny the kit. The partcial sprue below is one example. It includes a stove pipe, shudders, and other parts for the window.

Kit-bashing & Detailing the FOS Triangle Building

This is FOS HO scale craftmens kit is no longer in print. The author used this rather unusual kit and a bit of kit-bashing to create a structure for an odd spot on his layout. I would like to build a structure similar to this one.

Three Model Power Sheds

"You can never have too many small structures on a model train layout"; well we are going to test that one out. I found this kit on ebay and for a good price.I am looking forward to seeing just how much weathering and aging I can do to these sheds and shacks. If the illustratios can be trusted there seems to be a few details I am looking forward to seeing.

Three Structures and their Details

Although all of the structures are of board and batten construction they feature different types of roofs and there are two stove pipes included.

Although the three sheds are all small they come in three sizes.

There are many details like two set of fense, a turn-stile and another item that I am not quite sure what it is. Perhaps it will make a little more sence once I have built the item.

All in all I am am happy with the three structures. I only have a place for one of the structures so far, but these shacks will all have a place eventually.

Miniature Oil Tanks for Six Foot Flats, 2 varieties

If my maths are correct this tank can carry approximately 32 gallons of liquid, which in this case is oil. Its diamter is 4.85 foot and its height is 5 foot. I built these miniature tanks to sit on a six foot miniature flat car.

A Pola Watchmens Tower

Layout and assembly instructions for a Pola, HO512, a two story brick watchmens tower.

Although I have gotten side tracked and am working on two other structures beside the three I have already made a the post. I have always liked this structure, but was not inclined to use it considering it British prototype. However I have changed my mind and will make use of the structure anyway. Perhaps I will explain further in the future.

I do appreicate brick building and this structure was an easy build and I enjoyed putting the bricks.

The prosess is as follows. I give the model a good coat of grey or in this case I use white spray paint. Let the undercoat dry thoroughly and dry brush the structure with a color of chose. I chose burnt sienna. Make sure that you have only a little paint on the brush when getting started. You must insure that the paint does not obscure the morter lines. Patience will award you and don't worry if from time to time you over load the paint brush. You do want some variations of color.
