Scratch Building Low-relief Canadian Industrial Buildings

It looks like the structures are being built in O-Scale. Scroll down to the bottum of the page and read your way to the top of the page. Interesting reading and there are plenty of images of the buildings being completed.

Super Details

It is really in the details. A model can look great; however with the right details the project can be exceptional. I have been slowly unpacking my scratch building materials and stowing them away in my workbench cabinets and draws.

Small Hinge Assortment

Most injected polystyrene scale doors have very little detail, which is fine for those structures that will not be placed so close to the front of the layout. But for those that will be receiving some scrutiny add those hinges, latches, and door knobs, even if it’s only a glob of brass paint.

Large Working Hinges

These hinges could be used for ¼ scale or on some heavy door in 1/87.

Small Bolts

Nuts and Bolts make structural components more rigid and secure, however there is very little need using these very small bolts on anything that is not going to receive a lot of scrutiny.

Large Bolts

I read somewhere that one should detail those scenes that are close to the front of the layout in detail. A viewer then gets the idea that the whole layout is just as detailed. These bolts are for ¼ scale but will definitely add the scene by amplification.

Mine Train thru Nature's Wonderland

This time of the year gets me to thinking about model railroading. The Mine Train thru Nature's Wonderland railroad is an On30 gauge railroad. The ‘On30’ means that there is thirty inches between the rails, making it a narrow gauge railroad. On30 runs on HO gauge track.

The Mine Train thru Nature's Wonderland blog chronicles the authors ten year odyssey of building and then upgrading his whimsical railroad. There are many automated scenes including working geysers, shuddering rock towers and rutting caribou.

Narrow Gauge Two Ton Flat Wagon

This 7mm scale 0-16.5 narrow gauge 2 Ton Flat Wagon is manufactured by Peco who produces “Great Little Trains”.  As you can see by its design the flat wagon is built off a British prototype.  In the US this wagon would be designated as On30 and run on HO gauge track. The wagon is made from white metal and wheel sets of a non-conductive material.

O Gauge Horizontal Engine

Although this Horizontal Engine model, manufactured by Keystone Locomotive Works, is in ¼ scale it can and will be used on my HO gauge model train layout. Steam engines like this may have been found in the in the deep woods supplying power for a sawmill, or in industrial areas powering machinery in a knitting mill or supplying power for a pump at pumping station.

As you can see in the directions the kit is not too complex; two hours to construct and a perhaps a half hour to paint and detail. Not too sure where this detail piece will end-up on my layout yet, but I am sure an opportunity will present itself eventually.

New Products from Rusty Rail

Rusty Rail offers craftsmen kits and castings in HO and O gauges. Rusty Rails castings are very finely detailed and are cast in resin. The two new products being featured in the recent newsletter are displayed here: The Moonshine still in 1/48 and the cabin cruiser in 1/87. Rusty Rail offers many fine castings, scenes, and kits. You really have to visit the site to see for yourself.
