The most merciful thing in the world…

The most merciful thing in the world… is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on an island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far…

5 Beings from Vega XXI

“July 12, 1915 – Arrived this afternoon (3:20 PM.) five beings from Vega XXI.

I have said they glowed and I think by that I mean they glowed in spirit. It seemed that they were accompanied, somehow, by a sparkling golden haze that made happy everything it touched-almost as if they moved in some special world that no one else had found.”

Enoch Wallace, the Keeper of Inter-galactic Way Station #18327

“The keeper of inter-galactic Way Station #18327 had one purpose, to prepare Earth to join the other races of the universe.

The alien planets had many things that Earth lacked, eternal peace and prosperity, advanced knowledge of the sciences and the arts. And they were willing to share their benefits – provided Earth showed signs of being civilized.

As the only Earthman in touch with the universe, the keeper of Way Station 18327 was beginning to hope that his fellow men might prove worthy.”

Way Station by Clifford D. Simak

"Enoch Wallace

looked like any other man on Earth – except that:

--Time (about 100 years) had passed and he showed no sign of aging
--his house was invulnerable against destruction from any weapon known to man
--in his family cemetery a tombstone inscribed in an unknown language guarded the grave of an alien horror

For years no one had invaded the solitude of his lonely farm. But now the watchers in Earth were closing in on him, determined to solve the mystery of who or what it was that went under the name of Enoch Wallace—a man, magician, or nonhuman creature from an alien planet.

Asimov's The Naked Sun

The book art on the volume is one of my favorites and I would have loved to give credit to its author, but as of today I haven't been able to come-up with a reference for one. I will keep on trying.

"Elijah Baley, Earths most capable detective, took crime in his stride. But he had lived all his life in the underground cities, and the open, blazing sun of the planet Solario sent cold chills down his spine.

The Naked Sun is a rare and perfect blend of science fiction and detective story, with crime that could only take place in the future..."

The Naked Sun, Isaac Asimov, first copyywrite by I. Asimov in 1957, this Lancer Book (C) in 1964.

Close to Critical

Coverart by Dean Ellis

"Who is Fagin?

Fagin is a robot, an alltogether new kind of teacher, whose nine-foot pupils, each weighing posssible a ton, were busy leaning how to cope with peculiarities of their native planet Temelra.

Temelra's tempeture averaged 370', eight hundred atmospheres of pressure, "air" consisting of water heavily laced with oxygen and oxide of sulphur, and a constantly shifting crust.

Fagin was a good teacher, but he was not built to cope with the life and death problem of two young creatures, one human and one extra-terrestrial, who managed to catapult themselves into this enormously difficult environment."

Close to Critical, Hal Clement, 1970.

Close to Critical was first published in 1958 in Astounding Science Fiction Magazine.

A Host of Characters - Red-Shift

"Red is an industrail family with its roots in the dawn of space travel, it is very firmly fixed on Earth specifically and throughout the Dacro system.

Red-shift made the components for all conceivable space drives, the tools for dismantling them, the machines for servcing them, and replacment parts."

Karhidish Days of the Month

Where as the Karhidish calendar year is fourteen months long, a month consists of twenty-six days. Usually for clarity, the name of the day is given followed by the month. For an example- Eps in the month of Moth. Local dialects may pronounce these differently.

The Karhidish Calendar

The planet named Winter has 14 a month year. “The solar and lunar calendars concur so closely that adjustment is required only once in 200 years.” The 14 months coincide with four seasons and are named as follows:

Winter:

1. Thern
2. Thanero
3. Nimmer
4. Anner

Spring:

5. Irrem
6. Moth
7. Tuwa

Summer:

8. Osme
9. Ockre
10. Kus
11. Hakanna

Autumn:

12. Gor
13. Susmy
14. Grende

Although you would suspect winter like weather to start in the month of Thern, however snow usually start to fall in the month of Grenda. With up to five months of winter, the planet Winter revieves between twenty and thirty feet of snow.

Meshe is the Center of Time

The Left Hand of Darkness

"Our entire pattern of soco-sexual interaction is non-exsistant here. The Gethenians do not see one another as men or woman. This is almost impossible for our imaginations to accept. After all, what is the first question we ask about a newborn baby.

Yet you cannot think of a Gethenian as "it". They are not neuters. They are potentials during each sexual cycle - they may develope in either direction for the duration of that cycle. No physiological habit is established, and the mother of several children may be the father of several more."

Known Space: Tau Ceti

"Tau Ceti is a small cool-yellow GO dwarf with four planets. Strickly speaking, none of the plants is habitable. Two are gas giants. The third inward has no air; the intermost has too much. That intermost world is about the size of Venus. With no oversized moon to strip way most its air, it has an atmosphere like Venus: thick and hot and corrosive."

Grog's

"The Grog was psychic or something similar. It could control minds, even minds as insignificant as a sand rat's.

That was the purpose of the Grog's large brain. Its intelligence was a side effect of its power. For aeons the Grogs had called their food to them. They did not hunt after childhood. Once the brain had developed, they never needed to move again.

They didn't need eyes; they had little need of other sensory preceptions. They used the senses of other animals."

The Handicapped, Neutron Star, Larry Niven

Grogs are an alien life form found on the planet "Down" in the Known Space System.
