What Colors Make Gunmetal?

According to the benevolent AI this is how you can mix-up the gunmetal color:

"Mixing black and silver paint or ink generally results in a dark grey or charcoal metallic color. The black tones down the brightness of the silver, resulting in a deeper,Gunmetal-like metallic shade, or a darker version of the original metallic sheen depending on the ratio of black used.

  • A deeper, darker metallic grey, commonly referred to as "gunmetal" or charcoal grey.
  • Effect on Luster: While black deepens the color, it can sometimes mask the brightness of the silver, reducing its sheen if too much is added.
  • Usage: Often used to create shadows or to create a more subdued, metallic look in painting or design projects.

For a lighter, brighter metallic finish, you would typically add white to the silver rather than black."

The Prospect of More Painting

Although I have painted a few Reaper Miniatures in my day it has been a while I have purchased anything new fir a while. I like Reaper familar packs for the verity of charcters they provide. This is familar pack #2. It includes a demon with a speperate set of moulded wings, a cat, rat, owl, halk, and a baby dragon.

I usually have a time coming up with a decent painting scheme1 and some of these miniatures take some time to complete painting. That is one reason I like several I can work on at one time. It gives the paint a little time to dry before I get started on another section of the miniature.

1 A paint scheme is a curated combination of colors designed to create visual harmony and a cohesive, intended look, commonly applied in interior design, modeling, or branding to evoke specific moods or styles. Effective schemes often follow the 60-30-10 rule (dominant, secondary, accent colors) or use color wheel theory (complementary, analogous) to balance tones.

The Cottage is Under Construction

I have started the construction of this lovely Heljan cottage. Actually I have made some progress. The walls and windows are up, I decided to paint the home with three colors and as you can see the roof is suppose to be a terracotta. I am going to give this a couple dry brushings, in hope it might improve the appearecne/

There is a porch, chimney, and some trim that still needed to be added to the structure.

Previously: Needed a quick and economical cottage.

3 Lost Miniatures

Recently I was tidying up my paint station and I found these three miniatures in different phases of completion. Now that I have a new set of paint brushes and a lighted magnifier it should make it a bit eaiser to complete these.

And two more...

A Fez monkey and an old badger. With the exception of the thrid from the left in the first set of miniatures and the badger from the second set are all from Bombshell Miniatures.

Painting my Robot Vermin

I needed a break from my paperwork so I am started to paint my robot vermin.

Picture of my robot vermin being painted. When I grab a paint brush and a tin of paint this will be my sixth or seventh interation through these sculpts. I usually will use two new colors to paint or touch-up the miniatures at one time and perhaps a third to touch up the miniatures I have already painted.

Another Set of HO Scale Miniatures

The Gang of Six. I am in process of painting these little jewels. I am having another go at them. These are from Rusty Rails miniaturers. If the truth be known I have been working on these six figures for years; always off to something new.

Boo - Happy Hollowean

I primed this miniature sometime ago and then missplaced it. I found the piece and stuck in my painting draw. Recently, I was looking for something inwhich to make a post. This disembodied spirit is from Reaper Miniatures, a ghost.

Scratch-Building & Painting - The Fine Scale Honker Skiff

Building a small scale boat is on my bucke list. I was facinated watching the author scratch build this skiff. Starting with something small and simple might be a better place for me to start.

Proxie Models Ruined Building Assembled and Painted

It is nice to have something to post, even when I had hoped to have gotten further with my cleaner bot and although I did cut several strips for my windows, I never got to build one. Perhaps next month I will having something to post on these projects.

View 1, Proxie Models, painted and weathered. They are marketed as 15 to 20mm Ruined Buildings.

View 2, Proxie Model Ruined Building. They were very easy to build and I had fun painting and weathering them. They will make great scenery pieces.

My Paint Drawer-Small Projects

You will find a bit of everything here, even some small unpaited specimens. The small three drawed cabinate sits on the corner of my work bench.

I took out three castings, but only got to fiddle with following two. The first is a casting that came from Rusty Rail. I didn't see it listed in the current listings. It was included in a set of three castings: the coal bin, two barrels sitting on a rickety bench, and a rack full of pipes, which I sort of remebering painting.

This casting needs a couple more passes.

This bloke came with four compadres all iching for a fight. He stands approximately 32mm tall and will someday be used interchangeably on a small O-guage model train layout. He still needs a couple more passes of the paint brush.

I don't usually like using the camera flash, but perhaps it might have helped make these last two images a little more vibrant.

A Study In Rust

Corrugated panel is made from cardboard

Although my formulas for representing rust are similar they are never are the same, so I thought I would start to document my rust processes and decide which formula works best.

Color variations of rust can be found in variation of colors such as orenge for new rust too dark brown, for old rust.

Rust can be simulated by using paints, chalk, chemicals, a combination of these methods, and by using other substances like sprinkled cinnamon on a dark base background.

  1. Brown base
  2. Medium dry brushing of burnt sienna
  3. Light dry of “walnut” stain
  4. A few dollops of walnut, here and there
  5. A black wash overall

Matchbox Restorations

I watch several of this authors restoration’s this morning and was captivated by the authors abilities restoring these for longed metal cars. This particular specimen, a Lesney, No 42 Studebaker had been played with hard and had lost quite a bit of its original paint.

The Tar Paper Shack-#8

I scratch built this HO scale Tar Paper Shack by wrapping bits of black construction paper around a rectangle shaped box that I fashioned from cardboard. I don’t remember adding any strip wood for interior support. I just made sure the rectangles sides were square around a fitted cardboard floor. After the glue had dried I added the construction paper in scale strips that were cut to either three or four foot widths and painted these using Floquil grimy black and then added some dry-brushing. The door was constructed out of cardboard.

Dangerous Terror Corpses (from packaging)

The six zombies are made from some form of ridged plastic and they stand approximately four inches tall. In addition, their bodies and torsos can be switched out and their heads, torsos, and arms can be moved into a verity of positions. Over all I am quite happy with my new set of zombie figures and they make a nice addition to my ever-expanding collection. However, I do have two gripes, the first, the majority do not stand on their own and second, whoever painted these figures should take some painting lessons. They are painted awfully. I thought I might try my hand at making them look a little more presentable.

Extra, extra, read -All Bones About It

This is an extra and unplanned post. All Bones About It is an online diary of one man’s efforts to paint 265 miniatures from Reaper Miniatures first Bones Kickstarter. Chris is currently on miniature number 193. It has been very interesting to follow his progress and to see how his painting has improved over time.

I have known about this project for some time and I do apologize for not making this post earlier. Like many of my plans, it was lost in the shuffle.
