Remnants of a Highwaymen's or a Pirates Life

"Money. In rolls and tight wraps. A hugh haul of coins and notes, in scores of currencies. Shekels, nobles, and guineas, yes, the newest decades old, but there were ducats too, dollars, and rupees and sandnotes and arcane bawbees, square coins, little ingots from maritime provinces, from Shankell, from Perrick Nigh and from cities Ori was not sure he believed in.

A 'contribution', said the note enclosed. 'To hep with a Good Plan. In Jack's memory'."

Ponce de Leon

A sailor is brought up with a catch of fish and he posseses the journal of Ponce de León. This mysterious phenomena and the possession of the journal made the king of Spain order three ships to investigate the report of Ponce de Leon having found the fountain or youth.

In serach for the sivler chalices, Jack Sparrow finds Ponce de Leon's ship teetering upon rocky fissure.

The Misty Mountains

“Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere the break of day,
To find our long-forgotten gold,”

Having traveled far they still travel further.

“Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere the break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!,”

Prester John a Host of Characters

Through a manuscript that was circulated during the Middle Ages Prester John was said to be the Emperor Byzantium. Whether he is a priest, king, or both, all is lost in history. However, some of what he is purported to have written to a response to a request from the Vatican is quite intriguing.

“I Prester John, who reigns supreme, I excel in riches, virtue, and I have power over all creatures that dwell under heaven. Seventy-two kings pay tribute to me. Honey flows in our land and milk everywhere abounds. In one of our territories no poison can do harm and there are no noisy frog croaks. There are no scorpions, and no serpents that creep through the grass. No venomous reptiles can exist there and use their deadly power.”

A Host of Characters-Mad Carew

“There’s a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu,
There’s a little marble cross below the town;
There’s a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the yellow god forever gazes down.”

The Iron-Bound Books of Skelos

“I read the iron-bound books of Skelos, and talked with unseen creatures in deep wells, and faceless shapes in black reeking jungles. I obtained a glimpse of your sarcophagus in the demon-haunted crypts below the black giant-walled temple of Set in the hinterlands of Stygia, and I learned of the arts that would bring back life to your shriveled corpse. From moldering manuscripts I learned of the Heart of Ahriman. Then for a year I sought its hiding-place, and at last I found it.' “

Paying Tribute to the Golden Dragons

"Yet I suspected that something more than extravagance lay at the back of that seemingly wasteful act of tossing sapphires into an abyss, for thee were in the depths of it those two dragons of gold of whom nothing seemed to be known. And I thought, and I think so still, that Singanee, terrific though he was in war with the elephants, from whose tusks he had built his palace, well knew and even feared those dragons in the abyss, and perhaps valued those priceless jewels less than he valued his queens, and that he to whom so many lands paid beautiful tribute out of their dread of his spear, himself paid tribute to the golden dragons. Whether those dragons had wings I could not see; nor, if they had, could I tell if they could bear that weight of solid gold from the abyss; nor by what paths they could crawl from it did I know. And I know not what use to a golden dragon should sapphires be or a queen. Only it seemed strange to me that so much wealth of jewels should be thrown by command of a man who had nothing to fear—to fall flashing and changing their colours at dawn into an abyss."

The Adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow

I am amazed how often Jack Sparrow is without a ship to command. In the opening scene in the Curse of the Black Pearl, Jack he is seen sailing up to a peer in a small boat as it is clearly sinking. Again in the end of At Worlds End you see Captain Jack Sparrow in command of another small sail boat sailing the ocean blue.

Here Jack is checking his compass that never seems to point north, however, it does seem to have some super-natural abilities and points to whatever Jack wants.

Perhaps when combined with the map fragment that Jack stole from Sao Feng he will come upon some priceless treasure. I will have to wait and see On Stranger Tides.

The Encounters of Captain Singleton-The Elephant Grave Yard

An idea for a perfect game scenario.

“It had taken the adventures three days to pass the lake. Six to seven days march after it, the ground was scattered with elephant tusks in ‘such numbers as is incredible’. Some had lain there for hundreds of years. There were some that so large and heavy that even the strongest man among them could not lift them. As to the number of tusks; there was enough to load a thousand of the biggest ships in the world. The weight of just one tusk there was estimated to weigh three hundredweight, a fabulous treasure in its self.”

The Life, Adventures, and Piracies of the Famous Captain Singleton, Daniel Defoe.

Chapter 11 The Sea-Cave

The dull loneness, the black shade,
That these hanging vaults have made:
The strange music of the waves
Beating on these hollow caves

Wither

"I (John Trenchard) grew timid, and fearful of the wild night, and the loneliness, and the darkness. And all sorts of evil tales came to mind, and I thought much of balefuo heathen gods that St. Aldhelm had banished to these underground cellars, and of the Mandrive who leapt on people in the dark and strangled them. ‘Abite a me in ignem etenum qui paratus est diabolo at angelis ejus’-‘Depart from me into internal fire prepared for the devil and his angels’. "

The displacement cipher is cracked: fourscore-feet-deep-well-north. A simple, but effective cipher was used to hide the location of a fabulous diamond. The references to the scripture verses in the cipher were misplaced by one or more places. The number of the displacement represented a word in each verse that was to be highlighted.

Chapter 4-In the Vault

Let us hob and nob with Death—Tennyson

A Lost Treasure

The following inscription was found in a golden locket that was around the neck of Black Beard. Once the cipher was broken the instructions tell of the location of a fabulous diamond.

“ The paper was yellow, and showed a lattice of folds where it had been pressed into the locket; but the handwriting, though small, was clear and neat, and there was no mistaking a word of what was there set down. 'Twas so short, I could read it at once:

The days of our age are threescore years and ten;
And though men be so strong that they come
To fourscore years, yet is their strength then
But labour and sorrow, so soon passeth it
Away, and we are gone.
—Psalm 90, 21

And as for me, my feet are almost gone; My treadings are wellnigh slipped. —73, 6

But let not the waterflood drown me; neither let The deep swallow me up. —69, 11

So, going through the vale of misery, I shall
Use it for a well, till the pools are filled
With water.
—84, 14

For thou hast made the North and the South: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name. —89, 6”

Lost Treasure and Morey Eel

I own a couple sets of Reapers familiar packs. I completed these two pieces some time ago. I believe they turned out very nicely and look forward to completing a few more from my collection. The Moray eel can be found in Reapers 02948: Familiar Pack VII or comes bundled with a Dragon Fish, order # P02948B.
The treasure chest is also a Reaper miniature; sorry that I don’t have an part order number for this one.

A Treasure Map

Roger and Harry were stuck in a Spanish prison cell and knew that they were soon to be tortured in hopes that they may divulge the secret location of the treasure of Jose Leirja. The boys hoped to crack the cipher, memorize the location of the treasure, just in case they were able to make an escape, and destroy the only copy of the cipher which was held by them. They were able to crack the cipher and inscription read as follows:

Great worth of jewels, many emeralds and much gold…

Buried in deep hole under a stone. Iron ring cave.
Lonely inlet 75 degrees west by 20 degrees north.
North East end island Cuba.
Stone 14 paces, mouth 5 paces, right wall entering.

Treasure Islands

Painting my Dreadfleet Leviathan Island got me thinking about my Pirates at Ocean's Edge’s game and its rules. The standard way to distribute treasure is to distribute treasure pieces evenly to all the islands. In real life, who knows for sure, unless you had some kind of lead or you were in procession of a treasure map, whether the island you were visiting contained any treasure at all?  Might you be stopping at island just for water and or provisions? So looking for treasure would not normally be on one’s mind.

House Rule ##?

Before performing a explore action the player must roll a die. On a roll of a 1 or 6 the player will pick one treasure if they roll a 1 or may pick up to 3 treasure pieces if they roll a 6. Players may overload their ships holds, but will be acceptable to storms and from running aground on reefs. Any other die roll would exclude the player from “finding” gold on that island. This die roll would be in addition to the die roll to that was cast for an Explore situation card. Players may revisit islands to “search” for gold after discharging their gold at their home island.

10 Greatest Shipwreck Treasures Ever Found

Even though it has been a while since I have made a post on this topic, I do find the topic of lost treasure fascinating. 10 Greatest Shipwreck Treasures Ever Found describes ten cases where treasures were found, lost, and some cases are being found again.

Lost Inca Gold—Ransom, Riches, and Riddles

This is my second Lost Treasure post. Whether this article is fact or fiction it does seem to provide some evidence that suggests that there might have been a huge treasure trove of thousands of articles that had been squirreled away by the ancient Incas after being double crossed by the Spaniards.

The mystery is; does it still exist? This story might be a great scenario for a role playing or miniatures game. What do you think?

There are Inca miniatures, and treasure piece miniatures, and I am sure we can find miniatures suited for the other players in this adventure game.
