My Splintered Light Village Personalities

I recently was digging through my collection of unpainted miniatures and came across a set of6 figures, produced by Splintered Light Miniatures. These “Village Personalities” include a rabbit gentleman and his muskrat lady housemaid, a crazy toad, a distinguished badger, rat and mole. I was considering painting the rabbit gentleman to display with a poem I wrote for this purpose. I will need to retake a picture of rabbit, for the first take came out a bit blurry.

Earlier on I made a post that mentioned these miniatures. The post made a mention of a site that featured some of these miniatures. Recently, I found another site that also featured these miniatures. I feel rather daunted by the quality of work on these miniatures.

Pops Hops Rabbit and his Guinness Stout

Pop Hops the rabbit hopped across the road for a pint at the pub. A pint or two with a game of darts would have been sufficient, but instead he had several with his fellows. There were the other Rabbits McHew, and McKay. The badger O’Tooney and hedgehog McLay. There was much talk, Stout, and the game of darts that made them all hot. There is nothing better, to cool a rabbit down, than another Guinness.

On his return home, which was a hop across the street; Pop rabbit was involved in a misadventure that got him fixed to the macadam. God rest his soul.

Obituary

Pops Hops Rabbit was the sole owner of the Hops Brewery, which is famous for its early spring ale, and its autumn stout. Pops is survived by his wife, Sally and their three children, Mopsey, Floppsy, and Peter rabbit. No word on whether the Hops Brewery will continue to produces its famous Ales and Stouts. Lettuce hope so.

Monsters and Demons

Here are two links to ghoulish minis just in time for Halloween. With this post I have instituted a new label: horror. The horror label with be used to identify all things wonderfully ghoulish and horrid.

  1. Splintered Light Minis is offering their sets of 15/18mm Dungeon Encounters miniatures at a reduced price. These miniatures would be great for your dungeon crawl or RPG games. Splintered Light is also offering a set of 15/18mm Lizard men at a considerable discount.
  2. Twilight Creations is offering their Demons from Dante’s Inferno. There are 21 demons in 6 different poses. These miniatures are very close to 1/72 scale. You can get a comparative here, that shows the miniatures against measurements in the background.( Scroll down a bit on the page to find the piece on Twilight Creations)

15mm Miniatures-With a Scene in Mind

After visiting the Splintered Light Minis site and viewing their selection of 15/18mm Animals and Creatures I have an idea for a scene. The scene would include their 15mm Boars #MISC03 and Dire Wolves #MISC08. Each set includes six miniatures. The boars are casted in three poses, while the wolves are cast in six different poses. The scene would be set-up like this. The base would include some low brush, some small rocks, and a well worn run that the boars use to traverse back and forth rooting for food.

The boars are doing what they always do-rooting for food, when they are scented out by the pack of wolfs. Two boars are left to face off two wolves, while four of the other boars take off in flight being followed closely by the four remaining wolfs. So far it looks like the situation is even up, at least with the two on two, however with the running Boars, it only takes one of the wolves to pounce on one the boars from behind it looks like it may happen at any minute) and then it is time for a pork barbecue. That is, if the wolves will wait until the meat is cooked.

The Badgers of Redwall and Mossflower: Finding Purpose for my Splintered Light Miniatures

I am in the process of completing my Splintered Light Miniatures 20mm badger and am looking for his purpose in life. My badger could be a female badger, but I am assuming that one carrying a battle axe would be a male. I have yet to name this miniature, but I will most likely use one of the characters from the Redwall series. So far in my reading I have come across the following badgers.

Projects for September

Houston, we have a problem here. I should have known that I wouldn’t get to all those projects I had planned for the month of August. Last month I aimed a bit too high, so I am going to be a bit more conservative with my estimates this month.
  1. Finish painting Dreadfleet Leviathan Island (Scenery piece)
  2. Finish painting my SplinteredLight Badger (20mm)
  3. Create and paint a three detail pieces for the base, (the one I completed last month) gears, slab of steal, and rusty spring.

Finding Purpose for my Splintered Light Miniatures

Although I have completed two of the five projects for August, these two Splintered Light minis are long overdue. These two are numbers three and four of the set of five 20mm miniatures. The five are part of Splintered Light’s Faithful Heroes 2 which includes two mice, a hare, badger, and an otter. The badger will be on September’s projects list.

I have read the Chronicles of Narnia and the first two volumes of Brian Jacques, Redwall series and it seems that out of the two series, to make use of my Splintered Light miniatures, the Redwall series seems to be a better candidate for creating some type of war or skirmish game.

Splintered Light 20mm miniatures are wardrobed in the correct attire and there are many of the same animals available from Splintered Light that has been mentioned within these two volumes.

Projects for August

Here it is August already! Where have the last two months gone; another academic year is almost upon me.

The 28mm Persian miniature did not get painted last month or the month before. Perhaps this miniature will get some attention sometime in the near future. It seems that am a bit more ambitious this month. We will see.

  1. Paint Dreadfleet Leviathan Island (Scenery piece)
  2. Finish painting my Splintered Light Hare and Beaver (20mm)
  3. Paint base piece (this will be used to display a couple of steam engines that I have completed some time ago and some robot miniatures that I will be painting in the near future)
  4. Complete small metal shed (This is my first DIY project in a while. I also have a few other DIY projects that I that want to accomplish in the near future)
  5. Create and or paint a few prop pieces for the base, see number 3 (gear, slab of steal, and rusty spring)

Finding Purpose for my Splintered Light Miniatures

There are many scenarios that these mice could be brought into. The Redwall series includes several mice, and The Chronicles of Narnia features two mice. The Redwall series and The Chronicles of Narnia both include many situations that could be used to create a skirmish game. In addition, Mutants and Machine-Guns’ RPG makes use of evolved animals. Evolved animals, I believe, would walk on their hind legs and be able to wield a sword or some other weapon.

Finding a purpose for my Splintered Light Miniatures-Redwall

I have finished reading Redwall and I feel that this book would make a very good resource for a war game or RPG. In fact there is a Redwall RPG already. The text contains three books, The Wall, The Quest, and The Warrior. Although I feel that the second and third parts of this story are better suited for a war game, I suppose that part one could be worked into a game.

Splintered Light Miniatures offers many fine miniatures of mice and rats, the two main character types in the text, but also offers a host of other animals that were mentioned in the text.

Although a bit smaller than I envision the abbey, the Mini-Art offers a 1/72 Medieval Fortress could be used to complete a scene. Many of the scenes of the siege of the abbey could be set up using this model and Splintered Light Miniatures.

I Have Been Seduced

I have been planning on purchasing a set miniature’s from Elhiem Figures. I have wanted to obtain miniatures for Experimental Playground’s Mutants and Machine-Guns’ RPG. However, recently I was seduced and I have lost all sense of propriety.

While visiting a page from a fellow blogger I came in contact with Bombshell Miniatures and it was love at first sight. For one who is always looking for something unique I found more than a few pieces here that are calling out to be purchased.

I recently made a post on my having received my first order from Splintered Light. These miniatures are in 20mm. I mentioned that I would probably not try to paint anything smaller than 20mm, but now I find myself ready to order a few pieces that are smaller than 20mm. It is their uniqueness that has me throwing restraint to the wind.

More to follow…

20mm Goodness

These tweets are in reverse chronological order:

:: I hope to get to some painting this weekend and paint the fur on my Splintered Light otter.

:: I have been extraordinarily busy lately and I haven’t been able to get to my work bench all that much this week.

:: I am still not all that happy with the previously mentioned color combination; it seems a bit too light. I might try dry brushing the swords on the three miniatures and see how that works out.

:: I am not too happy with the results and I am going to try using equals parts of the silver and grey, but leave the speck of black out.

:: I have been experimenting with different color combinations for my miniature’s swords. One combination that I came up with is to use equals parts of silver and light grey and just a squirt of black to represent an iron sword. To gain some knowledge of shields I visited the Shields: Terminology and History site.

:: All five of my miniatures have received some paint. I like painting sets of miniatures, in that it gives you something to do while the paint dries on the current miniature.

:: The painting of the first set of 20mm Splintered Light Miniatures is under way, and their size has not been an issue, as long as I have my spectacles and there is plenty of light. However, I don’t see myself painting anything much smaller.

Finding a purpose for my Splintered Light Miniatures-2

While I am waiting for my Redwall and The Chronicles of Narnia books to arrive I have decided to look elsewhere for ideas on how to use my Splintered Light Miniatures in either a war game or a RPG.

Recently I started to read The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. I have just started to read this book, but have already come upon one event in chapter titled Kaa's Hunting that might make for a good skirmish.

The chapter tells of an old deserted city, lost and buried deep in the jungle that is called Cold Lairs by the monkey people. There is a battle here between hundreds of monkeys and three of friends of Mowgli; a thirty foot python, a bear and a panther.

Finding a Purpose for my Splintered Light Miniatures

Back in July of last year I pondered what miniatures might be appropriate for Experimental Playground’s Mutants and Machine-Guns’ RPG. At that time I was considering on using Splintered Lights 20mm animal figures for the RPG’s Evolved Animals.

Since then I have been thinking on how I could expand the use of these miniatures. Could the Redwall series by Brian Jacques or The Chronicles of Narnia be an answer? Both series make use of animated and demonstrative animal characters. Could these plots be woven into their own RPG or war/adventure game?

Inspiration for my Splintered Light Miniatures

I recently found a page that features some painted Splintered Light miniatures. Some of the painted miniatures are of those that I had recently ordered (scroll down a bit and look for the review for the village personalities).

Splintered Light Miniatures-Faithful Heroes 2

My miniatures from Splintered Light are beautiful. They are full of detail, but boy are they small. I had the notion that 20mm would be a bit larger than these are. I have worked with 25mm miniatures before and presumed that 20mm couldn’t be all that much smaller, but alas they are.

Here is a primed set of Splintered Light’s Faithful Heroes 2. The figures include an otter, a badger, a hare, and 2 mice. All are armed and presumed dangerous. I look forward to working with them.

My Splintered Light Miniatures Have Arrived

My Splintered Light Miniatures have arrived and I cannot wait to get home to take a look at them. I will need to clear an area on my bench for these miniatures. It is far past the time for my workbench to get a good cleaning and to be reorganized anyway. My workbench is a mess. I have so many projects in different levels of completion that are taking up most of my workbench.

One of my goals this year is to get to more assembly and painting accomplished. That is the assembly of some plastic kits and now that I have replenished the few of colors that I was lacking, to paint several of my sets of 28mm miniatures.

I have already have set out some of my paints out for these Splintered Light Miniatures; browns of every description and a few shades of black. Let’s not forget the greys and few metallic colors for the creature’s armor and weapons. I will also need some reds for sashes and perhaps some greens for their mantles.

Coupling the right Miniatures with Mutants and Machine-Guns RPG, part 2

When I looked over the rules for Mutants and Machine-Guns’ RPG I started to think about the miniatures that could be used in this RPG. There are three types of characters listed in this “gonzo post-apocalyptic” RPG: Pure Humans, Human Mutants, and Evolved Animals.

For the Pure Human and Human Mutants I am thinking about using 1/72 miniatures from Elhiem Figures. Elhiem has a large selection of metal figures, including a full line of modern military miniatures. I am considering the following miniatures:

Pure Humans

  • Product Name : American Adventurer; #P18
  • Product Name : Mz Whip; #P34

Human Mutants

  • Product Name : Retro Rocket Man; #P40
  • Product Name : Hero and Heroine; #SIFI02
  • Product Name : Acturian Pirate Nobels; #SIFI04

Evolved Animals

For the Evolved animals I went over to Splintered Light Minis and chose several of their 20mm Woodland Warriors. 20mm might be a bit smaller than 1/72, but wouldn't animals be a smaller than a typical human?
