Space 1889-A few Resource Sites

Although I had heard of “Space 1889” it was in passing. I am now trying to become more acquainted with this genre. Here are a few resource sites that helped me:

Frank Chadwick's News and Reflections on the World of Space: 1889

This is Frank Chadwick's official blog where he keeps us up to date on his latest offerings. Frank Chadwick is the creator of the Space 1889 genre. There is also a nice list of links to other Space 1889 resource sites.

Space 1889: Science Fiction Role Playing in a More Civilized Time Game Designers Workshop (GDW)

Offer reviews on the Space 1889 series of books.

Space 1889

“Science-Fiction Role Playing in a More Civilized Time.
Everything Jules Verne could have written.
Everything H.G. Wells should have written.
Everything A. Conan Doyle thought of but never published.......because it was too fantastic.”

RAFM

RAFM offers a nice collection of miniatures for your Space 1889 battles.

TMP published a construction article on creating your own Apace 1889 airships some time ago that I thought might be useful.

Typical Astrospheres used by Interplanetary Ether Flyer's

The original image used for this adaptation was found in : Introduction_to_Space_1889"

Ether Flyers are designed for higher altitudes. Flyers operating in the lower astrospheres cannot attack those in higher astrospheres. The only means an Interplanetary Ether Flyer can be attacked are by Flyers in the same or higher astrospheres. Ether Flyers are designed to operate optimality in the following five astrospheres:

  • Orbit
  • Upper Stratosphere
  • Lower Stratosphere
  • Upper Troposphere
  • Lower Troposphere

Ironclads and Ether Flyers-Glossary

Aerial Flyers
Aerial flyers, sometimes referred to as flyers, are aerial gunboats that are held aloft by liftwood panels.

Liftwood
Liftwood has unique anti-gravity qualities and is native to the Martian highlands.

Cables
A cable is a unit of measurement equal to 200 yards or 100 fathoms. A cables length is the basic unit of measurement used in this game.

Ether Flyers
Ether Flyers are large interplanetary vessels that use propellers for propulsion and liftwood for atmospheric lift.

Ironclads
Ironclads are armored sea going vessels and are the back-bone of any nations’ terrestrial naval forces.

Naval Vessels
These are steam powered sea going vessels.

Zeppelin
Zeppelins are used by nations that do not have the benefit of liftwood.  Zeppelins are held aloft by using large rigid lifting bags filled with hydrogen gas.

Ironclads and Ether Flyers -What is an Ether Flyer?

Image adaptation from Introduction to Space 1889.

Ether Flyer’s are large spacecraft that are used for interplanetary space travel. They use propellers for propulsion, but rely on “liftwood” for atmospheric flight.

Ironclads and Ether Flyers

My copy of Ironclads and Ether Flyers arrived in the mail the other day. Ironclads and Ether Flyers, Aeronaval Warfare in the 19th Century, is a turn based Role Playing Game (RPG) written by Frank Chadwick. Ironclads and Ether Flyers is part of the Space 1889 series and can make use of miniatures found at Game Tech (If they are still in existence?). Ironclads and Ether Flyers defines the technologies used, provides scenarios, and campaign rules (a campaign lasts ten turns).

I look forward to reading this book and learning more about “Space 1889”.
