Two Sprue Come Out of Hiding

Sometime ago, when I was searching for sprue I came across three horses and a dire wolf, which I recently dug out of storage. However two of the four "kits" were built a while ago, which leaves me two more of horse to build. I built one these last night.

I seem to have gotten the heads for these two mixed up and attached the head for the Empire horse on the High Elf body, or something like that. I need to add some paint.

Here are links to the other two miniatures

The Shack

The authors used foam core board for the sub-walls and some thinly sliced Styrofoam for individual boards. With some creative cutting, bending and breaking the author had the start of a rough and tumble shack. The author added a base coat, some weathering, and some small details to create a truly unique structure.

Mega Hive One & Two Technology Structure Modules

If I had only realized that these products would only be available for a short time I would have order another set of these part laden sprue. Since these products are longer available, more information about them is not available. However, if my memory serves me I believe that the components are geared for 28mm.

I had no intention of using them for their intended use; small war-gaming structures, but was thinking about using these components in other projects for their architectural benefits. The kits can be used for industrial or Sci-Fi scenes.

Grinnah of Goblin Town

Grinnah with his whip ready for Thorin Oakenshield.

Grinnah was a Goblin, of Goblin Town, who worked as an interrogator for the Goblin King. “He appeared to be a significant member of the Goblin Army, as he directly reports to the Great Goblin.”

This War Games Factory miniature is approximately 28mm tall and is cast of what seems like polystyrene. He sort of reminds me some sort of insect. This miniature is from the Wargame Factories Hobbit Escape From Goblin Town Board Game.

Mantic Orc Ax Troop Sprue

The other part of my Mantic order was this Orc Axe Sprue. The four of the five orcs included on this sprue are full of detail. Extra parts on the polystyrene sprue will allow some variation during construction.

Parts included on the sprue include:

3 bodies (1 with 1 arm, and 1 with a head)
3 heads with helmets
6 arms (3 with axe and 2 with shields); 1arm ready to accept an included axe and or a shield
2 adolescent Orc’s (one a flat, that is it only has one side)

Mantic Zombie Sprue (28mm)

My two Mantic Sprue arrived by post the other day. Both of the polystyrene sprue includes multiple parts that are both free from any flash and mold lines. There are enough parts and alternatives on the zombie sprue to create three complete zombies and one partial zombie.

Parts on the sprue:
3 upper bodies w/arms
3 lower bodies
3 alternative arms
6 alternative heads

A Host of Characters-The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu

Dr. Fu-Manchu is another memorable character I have added to my list of characters I would like to emulate during game play. Pulp Figures use to carry a set 28mm characters that would be perfect candidates for a Dr. Fu-Manchu and his minions. Alas, I will need to look around for some suitable miniatures to fill this spot.

'...To continue: This man, whether a fanatic or a duly appointed agent, is, unquestionably, the most malign and formidable personality existing in the known world today. He is a linguist who speaks with almost equal facility in any of the civilized languages, and in most of the barbaric. He is an adept in all the arts and sciences which a great university could teach him. He also is an adept in certain obscure arts and sciences which no university of to-day can teach. He has the brains of any three men of genius. Petrie, he is a mental giant."...

"Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high-shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, a close-shaven skull, and long, magnetic eyes of the true cat-green. Invest him with all the cruel cunning of an entire Eastern race, accumulated in one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present, with all the resources, if you will, of a wealthy government—which, however, already has denied all knowledge of his existence. Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr. Fu-Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man…"

The Details of the Spider Trees

I finally completed the other Games Workshop’s spider tree just in time for this gruesome season.

Imagine you are lost and are wandering around aimlessly in the forest. You see light up ahead and you come out to a clearing in the forest to see two dead trees with all their disturbing details. What is worse, you notice that several spiders residing on the trees seem to have taken notice of you. It is getting dark. Would you continue on in the forest or stay in the clearing? Your answers might prove to be revealing.

A Host of Characters- Skaven with Poisoned Wind Mortar

A Host of Characters is a new project I have started. Toward the close of last year, I started to collect miniatures to use as characters in upcoming war game stories. One such miniature, obtained from Hoard O’ Bits, was a Warhammer Island of Blood, Poisoned Wind Mortar and Skaven crew set. The miniature came unassembled, included three parts and a slotted stand.

Although I haven’t got around to painting this miniature I did assemble the piece. I am still questioning whether it was wise of me to glue one piece into place before painting the miniature. I might have a hard time painting different elements of the miniature, but what is done is done.

Start of a Pumpkin Patch

A collection starts with one piece at a time. I never started out to collect pumpkin miniatures, but here I have a start of a collection. These three resin castings are from the Ristuls Market Halloween Basing Kit. I will be adding a few more pumpkins to my collection and hope to creating a haunted pumpkin patch scene later on this year.

Ristuls Market Halloween Basing Kit

The Ristuls Market Halloween Basing Kit includes ten resin Halloween themed miniatures. Although metal castings usually have crisper detail than those cast resin, for these that will be used in some scene featuring a metal figure or two I am quite satisfied with their level of detail.

28mm Bretonnian Horse

My Games Works 28mm Bretonnian Horse is complete. I still do not have a place for this miniature, but eventually it will be used in some scene. This miniature went together easily.

Recently, I went back through a few of my earlier posts and added a “horse” label. It really is a lot easier to add the appropriate labels as you go, but sometimes I don’t have enough foresight as to the needs of posts in the future.

Projects for July

Half the year has passed and I am so far behind in completing my miniatures. I purchase new items faster than I can complete them. As a fellow blogger has recently mentioned it is the collecting that is more than half the fun of this hobby.

Creating a project list seemed to work last month. I completed three out of the four projects that I had designated for the month of June. Perhaps I should have stuck with three projects instead of the four, so this month I have only designated three projects for the month of July.

I have brought the incomplete project forward to this month list.

  1. Assemble and paint one 28mm Persian miniature
  2. Assemble and paint the 28mm Games Workshop Bretonnian Horse
  3. Complete painting two Splintered Light mice miniatures

These projects may be completed in any order, as the mood strikes.

My 28mm Games Workshop Wolf has been Completed

My Games Workshop wolf went together easily. The miniature, if you remember, came in four parts. It was a fun project; however it perked my interest for dire wolf and warg miniatures. This miniature was not advertised as a dire wolf, but its size and its apparent ferocious behavior reminds me of what a dire wolf might have looked and acted like.
